This stunning image a Maori elderly woman takes my breath away. Recently acquired, it is now in my private collection. Though nothing is known about the photo, it is dates to around 1900, The scarring on the woman's chin along the lines of her moko confirm that it is a very old image as it shows the tattoo was made by hand without modern tattoo machinery.
We are so fortunate that the only deterioration of the print occured in the lower right hand corner away from the face. This made restoration relatively easy. Aside from that, the image is practically flawless, perfect lighting and incredible detail. It's hard to believe that it is over 100 years old.
